An Introduction
The Education Programme The PCRD has been training in educational institutions since its inception and has developed a considerable body of knowledge and skills to assist these institutions in their development. The PCRD has been able to successfully pilot a number of processes in schools, working with all the stakeholders in a school, Educators, Learners & School Governing Bodies. These interventions have enabled us to develop good working relationships with the Education Districts & with other NGO’s working in the same field. With the alarming increase in the levels of violence at schools PCRD feels that its focus to work to create a culture of safe and peaceful schools and to develop the capacity of district officials to continue the programme has become very relevant to the needs of schools and District Education Offices. Programme Goal The programme’s main goal is to develop and implement a comprehensive Safe School Programme for schools in Education Districts in the Eastern Cape through the provision of training, research, publications and interventions. Highlights During the year under review the PCRD has been able to undertake a number of activities of which the following are some of the highlights: Development of a draft School Admissions Policy for the Eastern Cape Education Department. PCRD was asked to initially assist the Port Elizabeth Education District Office to improve their District Admission Policy, provincial officials heard about the process and requested that the process be expand to include the whole province. The policy will be promulgated in 2012 for comment and consultation and implemented in 2013. Development and distribution of a Safer School poster listing free services available to schools, teachers and learners. Distributed to all schools in the Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage Education Districts Revision of the 5 booklet Safer School Booklet Series. This was done to take into account changes in legislation and policy. The booklets are: • A Guide to Developing Policy for the School • Dealing With Learner Misconduct • Developing a Language Policy for your School • Peer Mediation • Dealing with the Disclosure of Abuse – A Guide for Educators • Research into the numbers and needs of Migrants and Refugee children in the Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage Education Districts, a cross over activity with the PCRD Refugee and Migrant Programme • Development of curriculum compliant lesson plans for Grade 10’s on Migration, Refugee Rights and Xenophobia, a cross over activity with the PCRD Refugee and Migrant Programme
