In 2009 South Africa celebrated 15 Years of Democracy and in 2011 the Project for Conflict Resolution and Development (PCRD) celebrated its sixteenth anniversary. In many ways its growth has been a part of the growth of democracy in South Africa, as it was originally formed in 1995 to foster a democratic culture in which opportunities for development are maximized through providing conflict management training and facilitation in historically disadvantaged, at risk and conflict ridden areas in the Eastern Cape. Since its inception, the organisation’s core business has been, through the use of Conflict Resolution and Community Development Processes, to assist in the development of organisations and communities to adopt peaceful means to solve problems. The PCRD makes use of the Adaptive Development Approach, which is beneficiary driven and its training is focused on communities for whom there are few resources available and little formal employment with the belief that the development and establishment of community conflict management systems will greatly enhance the efficiency of the target groups. To ensure that we are able to provide a holistic service to the communities we serve, PCRD has developed a number of relationships with other organisations and individuals who can be called upon as consultants to sub-contract for work that is not in the PCRD’s area of expertise. With a staff of five, the PCRD is based in Port Elizabeth and mainly serves the Eastern Cape Province. It is a registered Section 21 (not for profit) Company, which has Public Benefit Status (PBO No. 930003945). The PCRD is also registered with the Non Profit Directorate (NPO Number 004 – 823). The auditors are PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
